“A man loves his girlfriend the most; his wife the best, but his mother the longest.”—Old Irish Proverb
Whatever you do, be sure that you watch His & Hers. An intimate look at the lives, loves and losses of Irish women living in the Midlands—this film provides furtive glances at a world that is fiercely protected by its inhabitants. Heralded as one of the best Irish made documentaries of all time, director Ken Wardrop used his mother as his muse as he interviewed seventy Irish women about the men in their lives. As the Lighthouse Cinema’s website states: “from kitchens, living rooms, and hallways across the Irish midlands, seventy women, presented in ascending order of age, tell stories about the men in their lives. Each woman describes her own circumstances, but she also unconsciously contributes to a portrait of a composite personality. The upshot is a beautiful, deeply affecting tale, told – it seems – almost by accident.”
The Lighthouse is my pick for the best cinema in Dublin—with prices a third cheaper than you will find anywhere else in the city and an enviable aesthetic—the only thing that lets this cinema down is the selection of snacks. With the cinema on your doorstep there’s no excuse not to go!
