Second Age presents Dancing at Lughnasa by Brian Friel. It is a moving portrait of five spinster sisters living together in Northwest Donegal. Over the course of one summer in 1936, their lives are changed forever. Dancing at Lughnasa is one of the Irish playwrights undisputed masterpieces. It is a drama that mixes memory with desire, generous humour with piercing sadness. One moment you are laughing uproariously, the next your eyes are filled with stinging tears. Whatever the mood happens to be, at every moment the play feels startlingly true, tender and fresh. Produced by the leading classics play company, Second Age, and directed by David Horan, this production promises to deliver faithfully one of the great plays of Irish Drama. This is the 20th year anniversary of Dancing at Lughnasa, which was first staged in 1990 at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin. It won three Tony Awards on Broadway for Best Play, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress. In 1998, the play was adapted for film starring Meryl Streep where it won an Irish Film and Television Award. It has also won the Laurence Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Play in London. On a recent Irish Time’s list of the top 10 Irish plays chosen by readers it was placed third.
