Rock music fans listen up! Hard Working Class Heroes is an independent showcase festival for Irish bands and musicians that takes place annually at various venues located around Dublin city centre. It has proved very successful as a platform for emerging bands since the festival began in 2003. This year’s venues include The Button Factory, The Workman’s Club, The Grand Social, The Mercantile, Shebeen Chic and The Twisted Pepper. Keeping up its high standard of additional events and activities there will be the HWCH conference, mentor sessions, band tips section and more, with a host of international delegates on hand to share their wisdom and experience (thanks to the generous support of The Arts Council, and Culture Ireland). The Irish Times has referred to the festival as ‘an essential must-see/do on Ireland’s music calendar’.
The festival champions unsigned bands and is therefore a great event to attend if you fancy yourself as a bit of a talent-spotter. I would stress though, that the weekend pass is good value only if you are prepared to do some research, planning and plotting of your itinerary in advance. I find the Breaking Tunes site a fantastic resource when it comes to checking out new Irish acts. If you are not prepared to fork out for a weekend pass, have no fear, the festival always seems to elicit a good selection of buskers around the city streets as well!
