An Evening of Ghost Stories at the National Library of Ireland
Venue: National Library of Ireland, Kildare Street, Dublin 2 Website: http://www.nli.ie/en/library-late.aspx Price: €5 Date: October 20th Time: 8:00pm
This is a mere taster in preparation for next week’s Hallowe’en themed blog!
The hunger for chillers, thrillers and crime writing knows no bounds and many of the hottest properties in the genre at the moment come from Ireland. As part of the Library Late sessions, The NLI will be playing host to Dr. Darryl Jones, Head of the School of English, Trinity College, Dublin (an expert on M. R. James) and best-selling crime writer John Connolly.
The event will include a special screening of “O Whistle and I’ll Come to You”, a BBC adaptation of the M. R. James short story, directed by Jonathan Miller and starring Michael Hordern. James, the foremost writer of ghost stories in English, had a pitch-perfect talent for atmosphere, psychological intimation and the horrifying, slowly-cooked build up. The Guardian last year described this famous story as ‘arguably the scariest story ever written … This really is one to read, or watch, with the lights on and the door locked.’ Even better, why not enjoy the film in the safety of a crowd!
