Newgrange is a formidable sight and for anyone interested in prehistoric history a visit to the monument in County Meath (designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO) is a great way to spend a day. It was constructed over 5000 years ago (around 3200 B.C.) during the Neolithic period, making it older than Stonehenge in England and the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. Archeologists think it was constructed by a farming community that prospered on the rich lands of the Boyne Valley. The monument is a passage tomb but is also thought to have been an ancient temple due to the fact that it is aligned with the rising sun during the winter solstice. This is a really beautiful site set in a peaceful landscape.
Over the Top Tours run regular shuttle buses to Newgrange from outside the Tourist Office on Suffolk Street and, at €15 per head, their student prices are the best I’ve come across. For further information and bookings, consult the website. Access to the site is only available through the visitors centre and a student ticket is a mere €2. Bring a packed lunch to enjoy in the open air!
