Hallowe’en Excursion to the Hell Fire Club

Venue: The Dublin Mountains Website: www.hiddendublinwalks.com Price: €23 Date: 24th – 31st October Time: From 6:00 pm

If you happen to be an odd combination of a hiker and an avid ghost story listener, this is the perfect activity for you. Hidden Dublin Walks organize an annual trip to the notorious Hell Fire club to coincide with Halloween celebrations. The tour comprises transport to and from the mountain site, a guided walk in the pitch dark and story-telling sessions recounting the history of the site on Montpelier Hill, one of south Dublin’s well-known landmarks, commonly called the ‘Hell Fire Club’. The building associated with the name possesses an appropriately gruesome and paranormal past. It is situated in a clearing of woods at an altitude of around 1264 ft. Originally, there was a prehistoric passage grave on the site, the remains of which were disturbed during the building of the hunting lodge and club in 1725. But you’ll find no spoilers here!

The tour will begin at the medieval gates to St Audoen’s Church and will end back at the Brazen Head where you can warm yourself in the pub atmosphere and go over the night’s events. If you enjoy Halloween but find yourself frequently bemoaning the lack of activities for adults, you will no doubt find this a lot of fun. Just be sure to wear warm clothing, sturdy walking shoes and bring a flashlight if you have one (there will be a limited number available on the night). The tour takes approximately two and a half hours and involves walking uphill, so a basic level of fitness is required. In order to ensure a truly atmospheric experience, numbers are limited to an intimate 14 per tour and no children are permitted.
