The International Puppet Festival is delighted to celebrate its 20th anniversary this year with a wide and exciting range of performances from across the world, joined by some of the best Irish puppeteers to provide some evocative and memorable entertainment.
Extending its bases to venues in Dublin city centre, Dún Laoghaire and now Bray, this year’s festival features shows aimed at adults, children and family audiences respectively. The festival will include street events, workshops, library events and of course the shows themselves.
One of the highlights of the festival is ‘The Boathouse’, a show for adults playing at the Samuel Beckett Theatre this Saturday October 28th (concession €15). Staged by German theatre company THEATER IM WIND, it is an exquisitely beautiful performance that mixes narration, puppetry and associative pictures to tell a story about safety, loss and childhood during war.
For those automatically tempted to think of Punch and Judy upon the mention of the word ‘puppet’, this festival will open your eyes to the sophistication of marionettes, shadow puppets, rod-puppets and Bunraku manipulations. The festival aims to dramatize familiar human behavior while showing how remarkable and strange it often is. Come along and broaden your view of the performance arts!
